Ingredients
Instructions
Step 1
1. Prepare the onions by cutting off about ½ inch from the top (not the root end). Place the onion cut-side down on your cutting board. Starting about ½ inch from the root, make four evenly spaced cuts downward. Make two to three additional cuts between each section until you have 12-16 cuts total. Gently separate the petals to create the blooming effect.
Step 2
2. Place the prepared onions in a large bowl and pour the buttermilk over them, making sure the liquid gets between all the petals. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes to allow the onions to marinate.
Step 3
3. In a shallow dish, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly.
Step 4
4. Remove the onions from the buttermilk and let excess liquid drip off. Dredge each onion in the seasoned flour mixture, making sure to coat between all the petals. For extra crispy coating, dip the floured onions back into the buttermilk, then into the flour mixture again.
Step 5
5. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3 minutes.
Step 6
6. Place the coated onions in the air fryer basket, cut-side up. Spray generously with cooking spray or brush with oil to ensure a crispy exterior.
Step 7
7. Air fry for 10-15 minutes, checking at the 10-minute mark. The onions are done when the coating is golden brown and crispy.
Step 8
8. Carefully remove from the air fryer and let cool for 2-3 minutes before serving.
